One of the blessing/curse deals with being part of the Drag Week live feed is that I don’t have a lot of time to see cars in the morning before we start and since we cannot leave until everyone is done, I also lack the ability to see guys in the pits before they hit the road. This is why I nearly blew a gasket in the best way possible when a 1,500hp Chevette came to the starting line with a twin turbocharged big block Chevy engine and ripped off a high seven second pass at nearly 180mph on the first day.
This car does not look like any seven second, 180mph car I have seen in my life (and I have seen plenty!) but it works so well it is just fantastic to watch. The way the thing plants the tires and carries the left front wheel sent my little heart a flutter and when I learned that the dude bolted on mud tires to the back of it for the road driving portions of the deal I was literally in need of oxygen.
Unfortunately the driver/owner of the car had to call it a week early in the event due to reasons at home that far outweigh the importance of a fanciful drag racing romp through the woods. He did the right thing and unfortunately I was not able tell him this in person but he has my utmost respect for putting the things in life that are truly important ahead of those that are important for that moment.
I’m really glad that Kyle and the 1320Video boys got this footage because this car is an all-timer in my book. It looks a little awkward, doesn’t sit the way you would expect, has a little wing on the back, and ran down the track hoodless. It went from “I wonder what this is all about,” to, “OH MY GOD” really, really quickly and that’s just a testament to a good car and an owner/driver who can really wheel.
Drag Week legend. That’s what this dude is.
Old fashioned goodness – put the biggest motor in the lightest car and instant fun!!
