(Words and photos by Benoit Pigeon) – Every first Thursday of the month during racing season at Piedmont Dragway in Julian, NC, very large crowds show up to witness the Big Dog Shootout. This is a classic long standing event held in the evening. Pro Mods are the big cars as well as the a bit slower but nitrous only Renegade class. The rest of the show is filled with many cars, very nice for most and divided in a few classes. The Big Dogs have only two qualifications for an eight cars field but the event is only one evening long, making between rounds very short for the demanding and high maintenance cars.
No doubt that’s part of what makes this event so colorful. Add to this a nice sunset and the atmosphere is perfect. And perfect is what it exactly was for Travis Harvey who won the trophy, literally a statue of a bulldog, for the second time in a row with his Brad Boone owned nitrous Camaro.
