Ben Wenzel Sr’s name came up a little big earlier today when we were talking about guys who have amazing drag race history with the same car. In Ben’s case, the car you will see him compete in here is the same one that he bought brand new in 1967 and immediately began drag racing. When we say immediately, we literally mean it. This 1967 Camaro Z/28 was practically driven from the dealership to the strip. He won the 1967 US Nationals with it less than a month after he bought the car. People will travel to races just to see this car run because they love it so much and because it represents one of the longest lasting car/driver relationships in the history of the sport. This video will show you why Ben loves the car and why the car loves him.

We’re not sure what track this was taken at, but in the video you ride with Ben as he completes a 10.58/123 mph lap in the little 302 powered Camaro in stock eliminator. He does this with a four speed and a healthy wheelstand to start the run. After winning the US Nationals in 1967, Ben went decades before pulling down any more NHRA hardware but the wait was worth it. He’s one of the people that everyone in stock eliminator pits looks up to and someone who has certainly given his fair share of advice over the years.

It isn’t often that you get to ride with a driver and a car with this much personal history. While that’s cool, the fact that this is a 10-second car on a 9-inch wide tire, running a four speed is pretty flipping sweet.
