Heads Up Drag Action From Knoxville Drag Strip – Yes, That Is A Wheels Up General Lee!

Heads Up Drag Action From Knoxville Drag Strip – Yes, That Is A Wheels Up General Lee!

(Words and photos by Tommy Lee Byrd) – Knoxville Drag Strip is an eighth-mile track, located a few minutes north of Knoxville, in Maynardville, Tennessee. The track has been around for a while, but it’s quickly becoming known for its outstanding track prep and big outlaw races. This past weekend, Tommy Lee Byrd dropped in on the Showdown at K-Town, a big-money Heads Up race that brought out a huge car count and packed stands.

The race featured four index classes, 7.0, 6.0, 5.30 and 4.70, which provided plenty of action, thanks to a wide variety of cars and trucks. From street-friendly combinations to low-slung, tube chassis drag cars, the index classes offered many Ford vs. Chevy battles, as well as a few Mopar entries thrown in the mix. One Mopar in particular that kept everyone talking was the General Lee Dodge Charger that ran in the 7.0 index class. With big, smoky burnouts and wheels-up launches, the General Lee drag car was a childhood dream come true for this Southern boy!

Other favorites in the index ranks included the famous Soft Seal ’57 Chevy ex-Pro Mod, a lowdown candy orange Nova and a wheelstanding orange Vega. In addition to the index classes, the Showdown at K-Town featured four outlaw classes, which we will feature in a separate gallery. For now, enjoy the index door slammers and be sure to take a close look at General Lee in action!

The Duke Boys Charger is very cool. I love that it still had big front “tars” on Vector wheels and push bar.
Need to make a wheelstanding Starsky and Hutch Torino to match race!
