Huge Speed: Watch A 1,078hp 2JZ Powered BMW Run 197 On A Frozen Lake In Sweden
This is a wild video, not because of a crash or something bad happening but because of something good happening. What you are about to see is an E30 BMW packed with a really healthy 2JZ inline six run 197mph on a frozen lake in Sweden. The run happened just last weekend at the annual Speed Week festival that sees everything from big rigs to cars like this gunning for massive velocity on a frozen lake. You will see that the surface isn’t exactly even, the driver isn’t exactly sane, and the little E30 isn’t exactly aerodynamically sound. To say that the nose was up at speed would be like mentioning that a California Redwood is a pretty big tree. This is scary looking but it turns out fine.

The guys who posted the video are claiming that the 197mph mark was the fastest ever achieved by a 2WD car on ice and we certainly do not know any faster than that. We know that Sammy Miller supposedly went 250mph on ice in upstate New York driving what was essentially a rocket dragster that was equipped with skis. We’re not pitting one against the other here, just pointing some stuff out.

We have some questions out to our Swedish pals on this one because we want to know how long the course is, how the thing is timed, and all that good stuff. Are there any lakes that are big enough and frozen enough to do this in the USA? We’d totally buy a ticket to watch this show. Man, just listen to how PISSED that 2JZ sounds as it comes hauling by the cameras. Yowza!

Update: We have learned that the course has 1,500 meters of run up and the timing trap is 1,000 meters in length.

Thanks to Mathias Sapa Edelsteen for the tip!

Yep. But you can’t get on my case for not knowing what it is. You CAN get on my case if I didn’t know what an “L72” was…..

It’s Toyota’s 3.0L DOHC inline-6 (Most well-known for powering the MkIV Supra Twin Turbo). Real bad unit. Makes a ton of power fairly easy. Not that uncommon to see 4-digit output from them

That was 197MPH? I think anyone who has been to Bonneville will tell you it didn’t look like it.
