The nostalgia nitro funny car world is interesting. For as many teams as there are on the west coast trying to run 5.50s with all of their killer parts, there are teams dotted across the country running cars that are unique and totally awesome on their own. One of our favorites is the Boss Bird, a tribute to the car Arnie Beswick raced of the same name, this Pontiac Firebird bodied killer runs a Pontiac style engine using a set of billet heads that are patterned off of the famed Ram Air V Pontiac units. The block is from All Pontiac and last we knew the engine was running a 14-71 SSI blower, had a billet Crower crank, 6:1 compression, and used a 4.25 x 4.25 bore and stroke combo. That’s the basics but there’s obviously way more happening in there. The bottom line is that this is not a belly button car and it is a pretty killer assortment of parts that have gotten them to this point.

Obviously a five second run seems to be in the cars for this team and we would LOVE to see that happen. While this car cannot get into a blow for blow slug fight with the top echelon of nostalgia nitro racing, it can completely hold its own in every respect. One of the things that the nostalgia funny car world was supposed to produce when it got started was stuff like this. The body is true to period form with a blunt nose and great, recognizable shaping. If they bolted on one of the “new” nostalgia bodies that look like they belong on a pro mod, the thing would probably be laying down 5s on every run but they are staying true to themselves and people love it.

This video was taken at Norwalk last year during the Pontiac Nationals, a race was have always wanted to attend but have never quite gotten there. We need to figure that out, if for no other reason than to see the ‘Bird in action! This rules.
