Want To Buy A Tool Condo? This eBay Ad Is Hawking A Sweet Set Of Snap-On Tools – Just Bring $100K

Professional mechanics depend on their tools to make their living. Just like a truck driver needs a functional rig to deliver his loads and get paid, a pro wrencher needs all of the tools he can afford to make sure his work gets done properly and in a quick fashion to keep the work and money flowing. We have heard some guys refer to their tool boxes as their “tool condos” and this one, listed on eBay for the princely sum of $100,000 is certainly priced at the level of a nicely appointed condo in many parts of the country. BangShifter AJ Cortes sent us this link. AJ is a dealer mechanic who knows the tool business and while he knows that the box itself is worth some bucks but he does not think that the stuff in the box is worth another $80+ thousand dollars. Since my toolset would fit in about three of the drawers of this box, I’m in no place to debate this one either way but we know that there are lots of mechanics that read BangShift so we’re going to need your opinion on the value of this pro level collection.

Here’s some of the text from the eBay seller:

Up for sale is a complete set of mechanics tools housed in a triple bank Snap-On roll cab and top chest with side locker. The tool box and locker are 8 feet long, 6 feet tall and 30 inces deep. There is also an office style locker included in this sale. This set of tools is one of the most comprehensive sets you will find anywhere. All of the Snap-On, Mac and Craftsman hand tools carry a full lifetime warranty. All other tools have no implied warranty or guarantee.
A large portion of the tools offered are Snap-On and the non-Snap-On tools are of good quality (no flea market crap here)
This set of tools was put together by a marine mechanic but with some additions would be an excellent set for any other type of mechanic, engineer or tradesman.
These tools have been well maintained by a profession mechanic, they are all clean, in excellent condition and those that need regular calibration have been done.

These tools are for sale as a set, not individually. I will consider separating the marine tools from this set for a $5,000 deduction in price.

I will require you to come and physically inspect these tools prior to purchase due to the high cost of shipping. I do not want there to be any issues where I will be shipping this back and forth…. All sales are final. All funds including shipping/delivery fees must clear before this item is shipped or delivered.

What do you think? Worth the bucks or is this guy out of his tree?

I can’t stand the snappy guy. I know it’s not his fault for the prices but he is the guy who drives the truck around. I know a battery tester can run a couple grand easy. ObdII scanner can top ten grand easy. Hell I just paid forty for a ½ to ⅜ impact adapter!

One of many reasons I like Craftsman. They’re cheaper. But I’m not a professional mechanic either.

No, this is not worth 100k to anyone who actually uses tools. Two problems: the guy wants to get back full retail for everything in the box (and then some) and then there’s the fact that the only people who would be interested in a full set of tools already have a lot of tools…so they don’t need all of the duplicates that would come in buying this set. I bought a set similar to this from a mechanic, so I could have a set for my shop at the lake. Wound up paying not much more than the original cost of the box. While they are not cheap, (or easy to move!) those boxes are pretty handy.

As to the snap-on or Matco driver, hey that guy owns that business, and he is being pressed like nobody’s business on both ends. He has to front the cash for the inventory, then try to sell it on credit to some buy who may skip on him. And that agreement he has with the franchisor is one of the toughest there is. But that’s the life he chose, so there you go.

Most mechanics just take there stuff home when the retire (if they live that long) use them for working on the car, lawn mower and such, then will them to someone when they die.

  4. HotRod

I doubt they’d be worth $100,000 new. But then I haven’t bought new tools in a long time.
I have to wonder if all them air tools work.

  5. bandit

If i remember could have bought a complete route and a used Snappy truck and needed new tool buying customers for that price.

$100,000? Maybe at full retail, depending on what diagnostic tools are in that box. One thing I’ve always told apprentices is this-Snap On tools fix egos not cars. If you’re sure you want to pull wrenches for a living, go get a loan for 10K and outfit yourself with Craftsman tools, and this will set you up with everything you need to start in the trades, diagnostic equipment can come later. The last thing I advise them is that is if I ever catch them with their hands in my toolbox without permission , I’ll cut their fingers off with my cable cutters.
