This 1927 Ford Model T Racer Is An Amazingly Preserved Piece Of Racing History – Barn Find Perfection That Wears The Past With Pride

Fresh off a weekend of land speed competition wit the ECTA that showcased everything from the latest engine technology in the world today to steam power that reminiscent of what the world would have seen 100+ years ago, it gives us an interesting perspective on this 1927 Ford Model T racer that was found in a barn wearing the original paint and the original pieces it was raced with. This is not a fake patina job, this is not a a recreation, this is not a modern guy’s idea of what a race car of this era would have looked like. This is the real McCoy and it certainly shows why it was so dangerous for the people that raced ’em.

It wasn’t the high speeds that killed so many people back then, it was the fact that they’d be thrown from their cars and run over by other racers or errant parts would hit them, or the mechanical brakes would fail and they’d careen through a wall, or the car itself would fold up on them because they were so shabbily built and used up by the time they got to the dirt track, or any number of reasons. This car is powered by the engine out of a Model A, which is of course newer than a Model T. That Model A engine was the hot ticket for a time when racers wanted to go faster and there was speed to be found at the wrecking yard.

The one thing we cannot get over here is just how cool the old paint and lettering are. The faded 7 in the front grill, the faded 7 on the flanks of the car behind the front tires, and the general state of light decay is amazing. The tonneau cover that would have been snapped on to swap the car from street mode to race mode at the track looks great, the small little windshield on the driver’s side to grant some protection from flying dirt and rocks, and the red wire wheels are all just perfect.

The seller claims not to be a car collector and claims he bought it because he was so struck by the car when he first saw it. We believe him. We could stare at this thing for hours on end.

Seriously, that is a childhood wasted watching Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang on an endless loop kind of awesome.

That car is absolute perfection. Truly a work of art, years in the making. It would be so cool to be rich.

what is not mentioned in the article is the spectacular job someone did building the to shorten the body. Look closely you will see a small amount has been removed at the back of the cab, and then put back together with bolts, it fits perfect, and gives the car that little something special. It is my understanding the car was originally raced in Northern Iowa and SE Nebraska back in the day.
