Maybe The Best Car We’ve Ever Seen: A Boss 429 Mustang That I Have Driven!

Maybe The Best Car We’ve Ever Seen: A Boss 429 Mustang That I Have Driven!

Sure we’ve seen Boss 429 Mustangs for sale before, but this one is special for several reasons. Let me tell you a story… In 2007, my buddy Chuck Schroedl and I each drove a dually and gooseneck trailer from Jasper Indiana to Las Vegas for the SEMA show. The trailers were full of Ridetech cars and SEMA display, etc. It was an adventuresome drive in many ways, that involved New Mexico highway patrol, weigh stations, some scam to screw people out of money by making you pay some truck drivers to haul your crap back across state lines, etc, etc. New Mexico still sucks in almost every way because of that trip. But that’s not the part you care about. After getting to Vegas and getting unloaded and all that, and enjoying one night of adult beverages, Bret Voelkel from Ridetech asks Chuck and I if we can take one truck and trailer down to Ontario California and pick up a car for him. He’s paying us to be there for the week, so we’re all good with it, and we leave at the crack of dawn the next morning. In between napping and driving, we both realize that we know nothing about this car other than the fact that it’s a 1969 Mustang that’s supposed to be evil.

Upon arriving at Intro Billet Wheels in Ontario, minutes away from where I now live, Chuck and I are astonished to find that the car we are picking up is a Boss 429. Not a 1969 Mustang with a Boss 429 in it, but a real deal holy crap Boss 429! The guys at Intro proceed to tell us that this thing is pissed off and a pain to drive and that they don’t want to touch it because they know how much it’s worth. Chuck is like “F that dude, I’m not driving it either.” Well ladies and gentleman, if there is one thing you never ever have to do, it’s ask me twice to drive a cool hot rod.

Pissed off is the truth. Bret had said that the motor in this thing wasn’t quite stock and that some famous NASCAR guy had worked on it or something, but we were half asleep and hung over so we hadn’t paid attention. We were paying attention now. After dropping the door on the trailer in the parking lot, I fired this bitch up and backed it out. It’s loud. It’s got a heavy clutch. It’s big. It smells like an old car.

It’s PERFECT! And keep in mind, I’m a die hard Chevy guy. Like to the core. And at this point in my life I was not afraid to tell you why. I would have parked this thing in my garage in about 2 seconds. Everything that makes normal people not like old cars, or that makes them afraid of them, this car has. In spades. I’m in love.

It’s the best drive across a parking lot ever.

Once we’re on the road, and wide awake now, I’m on the phone with Bret going WTF? He proceeds to tell the story of how he got this thing, which is an awesome example of the stars aligning, and I’m blown away. Bret’s dream car, of all time, was a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang. And here we were hauling one to him. And did I mention that he’d never even seen the car in person? No really. Never had seen it in person. And I got to drive it first!

The drive to Vegas couldn’t happen quick enough, and when we pulled into town we headed straight for the convention center. We parked just down the block, unlocked everything and waited for Bret. I swear to you there were tears in his eyes when we opened the trailer door that first time. After fixing a leaking fuel sending unit, we backed it out and filled that sucker with grown men. There were 4 or 5 of us in the car. And we drove it down the street, up to the barricades, and without even saying anything we let right in. What the hell?! Once SEMA starts, you don’t get in with another car. Like never ever ever…unless you are in a Boss 429. We parked it right there in one of the displays out front, and people were on it like kids on candy falling from a pinata.

It got driven to the Hard Rock I believe, and a couple other places after the SEMA Show closed, and then it went home to Jasper. When Bret took his wife Sharon for a ride in it the first time, she turned and looked at him confused and asked, “We paid how much for this car?”

Since then it has been adjusted and tweaked and massaged, but it’s that same bitchin 1969 Boss 429 Mustang that gave me lumber the first time I sat in it. This car has only 50,000 miles on it. It’s nice. It’s not “perfect”, but it is a really nice driver. Bret also has a pretty good collection of Boss 429 stuff, including some stuff nobody, like nobody, else has.

So why is it for sale? Well, Bret’s like the rest of us, he can’t leave anything alone. And while he and I are both cut from the same cloth that tells us not to be afraid to cut up just about any car, there are exceptions. And this is one of them. Bret has a vision of a Boss 429 that will be epic, but wouldn’t be right to do to this original survivor, and we love him for knowing that. I hope if finds a great home. I love this car.

Selling your soul would probably prove to be quicker , easier … less impact [ in the short run ] … and a hell of a lot more profitable

      😉

Has there ever been a ‘ bad ‘ authentic Boss 429 … massaged or stock ?

    No there has not !

Is this perhaps the best of the breed ?

A little more details on the NASCAR guy that went thru the motor etc would be nice …. but it just might be .

Should this of brought an end to Mr Reynolds love of all things Bowtie ?

Damn right it should of !

But errr … does Mr Reynolds need to spend some serious time in NM with a good guide and a bit of planning to discover the joys of the best of the Southwest ?

Yeah Chad … you really do . Cause trust me … you have no idea what you missed out on the first time around . NM being 2nd only to Colorado for being the Best in the West .. period 😉

I have to say, I had been to NM a bunch of times before this instance, and have been back multiple times since, but I will avoid it with a trailer at almost any cost. With that said, I love the scenery, the food is awesome, and the people nice. So overall I’m good with NM as long as you enjoy it behind the wheel of something that isn’t pulling a gooseneck trailer. Then they are communists and I hate them. LOL

    BTW & FYI

Off topic but [ Ford ] related news

    Its been confirmed by Ford

The new Ford GT is real …. will be debuted at the Detroit Auto show [ finally a reason to go to the damn thing ] … and will race … at LeMans as well as several other yet to be announced series

And all I can say is …

    Yeeeeeeeee … freaking ….. haaaawwwwwwwwww !

Wow, look at the fourth and third last pics.

The car has 180° headers on it!

Not thinking about it in the ’60’s, I never crawled under a T-Bolt to see if they came with ’em.

Many folks aren’t aware of the [performance] benefits of 180’s and they were difficult to shoehorn into a production car with a large engine and minimal clearances. I suspect most all were laborious custom fabrications.

I keep thinking of today’s 4/7 cam swaps. Were 180° headers a precursor to that?

Hard to turn a bowtie guy from the chevy orange pulsing through his body. That said, I’d sell every vehicle I own to buy this car if it would be enough. The car IS perfect. Nice, but not too nice to drive and beat on occasionally. Its modded some and that’s a plus. The fact its not a 100% resto, sitting under a cover, admired from afar piece of artwork/investment is also epic. I don’t know what Boss 429 Mustang he could be envisioning, but if it includes any deviation from running the shotgun and stick combo or putting black 20″ wheels on it then the plan should be scrapped. The car pictured above is beyond any hand-crafted creation others could spin out. It is the real deal with the visceral experience we all long for. I don’t see that it can get any better than this – and I’m a chevy guy too. Gimme.

Chevy guy too, but one step above the baddest-assed Camaro made back in the day was the Hemi Cuda, and one-half step above that was the Boss 429 Mustang. The ultimate. No, I don’t need one…

The most badass Mustang that I ever rode in and would give my left nut for was a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 with a 427 Side Oiler that my friend John had while I was stationed in Hawaii.
Before I left Hawaii, and the 75 Duster was finished and at the airport, I met John and the crew at the Hickum AFB auto hobby shop one last time and said my goodbyes to them.
John gave me one last ride in his GT500, and he drove it like he meant it, that Shelby became like a sprint car with its ass end going all over the place. I will never forget that ride that John gave me that day.

IMO – too much money for a non stock car. Too many items need to be replaced to get the car back to stock; wheels, tires, exhaust, etc. Stock Boss 429s bring big money. Not modifed ones. Car is worth IMO, no more than $130K

    1. WillyKJr

Agreed Lee. Fun factor for this car would be very high but not a great number for a car that needs a significant amount of changes to make it a good investment piece. Fun yes. Not $175k fun.
