This 1978 Ford F600 Is An Old Fertilizer Spreader That Would Make A Sweet Mud Rig!

My pal Wes Tarkington sent me a note via Facebook the other day that was simply link to a truck for sale. I clicked it and was greeted with this magnificence that you see on the page before you. This is a 1978 Ford F600 that had been modified for use as a fertilizer spreader. The massive tires were to aid in keeping the truck from sinking in muddy fields and to prevent from killing everything that it passed over while spreading the fert. With the spreader long gone what we are left with is a cab and chassis powered by a 360i Ford V8, backed by a manual transmission, and underpinned by Marmon-Herrington four wheel drive and a pair of massive axles that I believe were likely made by Rockwell. NOT top loaders, a different model.

The big fertilizer spreader tires are exactly the pieces that got the monster truck world rolling back in the 1980s and it looks like this rig has been slogging through some pretty significant muck and mire recently with the amount of crap that is hanging off of the front axle. There does not appear to be much rot or wear on the truck. There’s dirt all over it but the cab seems to be in otherwise great shape.

What would you put on the back of this thing? Us? We have visions of a big custom built utility body like you see on a contractors truck with all the doors and compartments back there. It would look cool and you could keep all of your recovery stuff in it because undoubtedly you’d be either dragging someone else out or you’d get yourself so deep with this thing that you’d need whatever help you could muster!

Huge tires, three sticks through the floor and the classic 1970s Ford styling? This is freaking perfection. The guy wants $5,500 for it.

Flatbed platform with armored sides and a pintle mounted .50 cal machine gun at two corners and a pintle mounted minigun at the other two corners. Zombie killer extraordinaire.

Bloomington Speedway in Indiana uses a similar truck with shorter wheelbase for their dirt track preparation.

drop a healthy big block, shorten the chasis and install a longbed and turn it into an “early” bigfoot prototype, make sure to get it registered!

First person to clean this thing up, throw a bed on the back will win the first country music tailgate party you attend, erg you’d win every tailgate party.

I’d make it a crew cab plus and throw a long bed from a same era camper special so it has the built in tool boxes.
