There’s not much better than a smartly built combo that blows people away and has “well thought out” written all over it. We have to thank BangShifter James Pringle for tipping us off to this killer 1979 Ford F-100 truck that does in fact run 12-second quarter mile times and it does so with a 300ci inline six engine that has a rear mounted turbocharger tucked behind the axle of this weapon. If you are now beginning to think that this truck is full of all kinds of crazy mechanical trickery, stop thinking that.
The basis of the engine is a bone stock 100+ thousand mile 300ci bottom end that has been enhanced with a high volume oil pump. The head is filled with stock sized valves and has been ported some by the owner. The intake manifold is an off the shelf Offenhauser piece, and there is a Crower cam in there opening those valves. There’s a blow through carb on top of the whole thing.
The turbo mounted out back is a T72 piece that was bought off of eBay and will produce 20psi of boost when the thing is spooled with the truck on the brakes. The horsepower is estimated to be somewhere around 425 or more. Why did he mount the turbo out back? The builder/owner thought it would be easier to stick it back there and plumb the pipe to the front than dealing with what would have been some complex bends under the hood. There’s also the value of having an additional 50 lbs in an area that can help with traction in a truck with an empty bed.
Then whole build is chronicled at the link below and you should read it. The guy who built this thing seems like a really smart dude and he’s out there hammering on this truck for fun. We really love projects like this where someone applies their brains to make power with what they have and they do it in a different way than people expect. Yes, he could have jammed a big block in it and it likely would have been easier but this is way freaking cooler than that! 100% BangShift approved!
