Money No Object: The Mid-Engined 1978 Oldsmobile 442 Is Up For Auction!

What can you say about a car that has been covered front, back, and sideways? This 1978 Oldsmobile 442 has been around the block since it made the October 1978 cover of Hot Rod Magazine. You can’t miss why, either…that blown Oldsmobile 403 and Toronado transaxle setup isn’t exactly subtle, and neither are the special flared rear fenders, the incorporated ducktail spoiler, or the big, broad red-and-yellow body stripes. Should this be in a museum? Should it be running the Silver State Classic, or even better, Drag Week? Whatever the case, if you’ve ever wanted one of the better freakshow cars from the late 1970s, your chance has arrived. This is one of the funky slant-back G-body 442s that we seriously want.

With a coat of gloss black and narrowed rear fenders and a change of wheels this beauty should be right at home on today’s roads. I admire skill such as this when after all that hard work the car looks like it came from the factory as a mid engine monster!

      Kiss my ass Geordie!

This car should never, ever be changed! I remember this car from high school and always wanted it! Too bad my finances aren’t there to grab this masterpiece.

And the car resides in NJ! Oh the humanity…

These cars were pretty ugly, and this one is a big improvement over stock obviously. The widened back fenders are a big improvement over the ugly custom van flares that were on it originally. I don’t love the colours either but somebody has gone to a lot of work to put it back to its original state, so I would feel compelled to leave it like this and enjoy having the car from the magazine.

This car keeps showing up for sale, or being sold. Other then a show car, it’s worthless.

For years it would show up the at Car part swap meet in Springfield Ohio. it would be on the pavement or just off it, at the start of the Car Coral.

It was never in Ohio…atleast not from 1990 to now…and its far from worthless…it is one amazing ride that has lived through some wild times ..When one doesnt get it…they just dont get it.

Thanks guys for the story… Sure got a lot of attention all over thr net when I sell it….Its going back home where it started ..Michigan…the new owner is so excited and lives near the creator, Bill Porterfield. The 78 Mid Engine 442 Olds traveled with ownership from Michigan..to me in New Jersey…to Oklahoma…then to Nevada…and then back to me and now..back home to Michigan again. Very cool car ..very cool life…very cool story. Harry of http://www.HotRodHarrys.com

The GM intermediates used the A-body designation until about ’82; whichever year they gave all models more stylish sheet metal. Then they were reclassified as G-bodies.

    1. Harry

Thr “A” body was given to the fwd cars…because GM thought they were going to phase out rwd cars after 1981…so when they realized their mistake..the already popular restyled 1981 “A” body came back in 82 as a “G” body and stayed until 1988 when GM killed it it off.
