Rough Start: This 1966 Plymouth Fury Is Ready For The Strip Or Could Be Put On The Street In Short Order

Rough Start: This 1966 Plymouth Fury Is Ready For The Strip Or Could Be Put On The Street In Short Order

We all want to drive something absolutely badass, something that looks the part, can move like none other, and makes the right noises…none of which really works when your budget is “shoestring”. But how low must you go to find a nice balance? What concessions are you willing to make in order to get a street monster going? Would you go for a car with the right parts or the right car that doesn’t have the kit together?

Here’s a good example of middle ground. I’m breaking the Rough Start budget for this by utilizing the argument my wife keeps ready for use: “you aren’t going to get a deal like this anywhere else”. The 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury III isn’t the first car most people go for when it comes to a Sixties project, but there’s a lot to like about these sleds: great looks, huge engine bays, and of course, how often will you see another one done up nicely?

66 sport fury III , 400 engine, 727 transmission, narrowed 8 3/4 inch rearend, tubbed, 456 or 489 gears, haven’t pulled hog head to confirm which gear it is all I know at this point is one turn of the wheel and the drive shaft turns almost 5 turns, hooker headers, msd 6al box, unilite , roll cage , fuel cell, trans cooler, bucket seats , console, pro star wheels , first $7,500.00 takes the car home , needs some TLCto be really jam up ride , its neat the way sits now, Hagerty auto auction claims this car in a #4 condition is worth $13,000.00

Provided the 400 doesn’t have a window in the block, this is a score. It’s not perfect but there aren’t any signs that would make me turn away from the good stuff. As it sits, the Fury is ready for some small-time strip work, but we’d be in a hurry to put a more street-friendly gear set in the back and legal exhaust, making this Plymouth a full-on boulevard terror. Where else are you going to find a deal like this?

I like the drag stars but with a wheel change, a quiet exhaust and a whiff or two of nos, this could be a real sleeper…and I’m kinda a GM guy 🙂
