Wisconsin’s Goodwin Competition builds some of the nastiest drag race, truck/tractor pulling, and racing boat engines that we have ever seen. It is always neat to check in with those guys at the PRI Show to see what they have up their sleeve on any given year. Normally what we find up their sleeve is insane amounts of horsepower bellowing from engines that look like massive, mostly billet looking engines designed to be used in some of the harshest environs known to man. This year the boys did not disappoint when we met up with them. Strangely they told us not to hang out at their booth at the show but to make our way to the ARP Fasteners display to see their latest masterwork which is a 640ci mill that is based on a Goodwin (in house) made block which makes 2,000hp on 93-octane fuel and is force fed by a pair of 4.0L Whipple blowers. It is tough to convey how physically large this engine is. Making it look extra mondo is the large by huge water to air intercooler that sits between the Whipples and the intake manifold.
Primarily designed for the world of boat racers, the guys told us that this big baby would likely be on a service schedule of 125hrs between checkups and freshen ups at Goodwin. We’re dying to see one hanging out the nose of a pulling truck. Sure, the driver would need a U-boat periscope to see in front of him but that is his problem not ours! Of all the features we love about this engine, the fact that it uses a 70mm cam with nine bearings supporting it may be our favorite. The all billed construction of this mountain of aluminum is also incredibly impressive, and the knowledge that Goodwin is literally making the majority of the components in house like the block and the heads makes our smile even wider. The five in bore spacing block could give more displacement than the 650ci that this engine measures out to, the reliability factor would likely diminish the more bore and stroke they added to the engine. If you don’t want all the awesome of the blowers on the top you can opt for an NA version that will get you into the 1,600hp range with EFI but what’s the fun in that, really? The belt drive for the blowers alone had us staring for minutes on end in admiration.
There are photos and some more dedicated information on this mammoth motor below. If this is wrong, we don’t want to be right….ever.
Just wow. Its more art than motor. If there is no budget then this is the way to go.
