The other day we took you for a ride with the Matty boys in their Time Bomb Camaro, today we’re switching gears and shoving you in the passenger seat of Jerry Hoffman’s Nissan 240sx land speed car. This is a pretty interesting piece and it speaks to the creativity and coolness of land speed racing as the car is a mash up of parts from all over the place. The engine is a turbocharged 2JZ, the transmission is a four speed G-Force piece, the rear end is a GM 10-bolt with 2.73 gears in it, and there’s probably other stuff in there from manufacturers we’re not even thinking about. Jerry is the dude behind DIY AutoTune and his company is all about developing and growing the world of MegaSquirt EFI and engine management systems. As you’d expect it is those products providing the management for the Toyota engine here.
This video is doubly cool because there is some on-screen telemetry showing us RPM, speed, and how much of the throttle Jerry is using to get the car down the course. On this pass he runs 177mph and earns a class record. What’ll blow your mind is the throttle “meter” which depicts how hard Hoffmann is standing on the gas or better yet how little he is standing on the gas to make this big speed. Basically, at 177 this thing isn’t even working up a sweat yet. Hoffmann plans on running Bonneville and more Ohio action this year. We look forward to following his progress!
