(Editor’s note: This weekend I’ll be up in the tower calling the action at the NHRA national event at my home track in Epping, New Hampshire. The craziest thing that happened up there during the 2014 race was this amazing spin. Nothing was injured, no one was scratchd, but man was it wild.) – There’s all kinds of crazy things that can happen during a drag race and it doesn’t matter how quick or powerful the car is. Look, I know guys who have nearly bought the farm in 12-second cars before after things get weird on the top end. In this video we’re going to see things get REALLY weird on the top end and through magical timing, good luck, and the helpful hand of physics the situation did not progress from weird to complete catastrophe.
Thomas Fletcher is the guy driving the blue Peak sponsored Camaro and Peter Biondo is the guy driving in the other lane. This run was made during eliminations and it didn’t start well for Fletcher. Fletcher got tree’d by Biondo and it was enough of a margin that his chances of pulling out a win were very slim. In a lest ditch desperation move, Fletcher buried the brakes at the finish line trying to force Biondo into an error. The only thing this did was to send his Camaro spinning around, nearly clipping Biondo in the process. It gets really close.
The Camaro didn’t hit anything and the only real “damage” was the fact that all four tires were flat spotted during the spin. In slow motion you can see that at any given time there were one and sometimes two tires off the ground! We’ve never seen a spin like this that ended up with an intact race car. Thomas Fletcher is a lucky guy and someone we suspect won’t be repeating that maneuver again!
