S and W Race Cars has been in business since the late 1950s. Their operation is impressive in both the scope and quality of work that they churn out. From the large line of parts they manufacture themselves in house to the scratch built race cars that continue to dominate at strips all across the country, S&W is going strong. At the 2011 PRI show they had some neat stuff in their booth but it was this fabricated, bolt-in Ford 9-inch housing for 2005-2011 Mustangs that got our attention.
With the popularity that these cars have and with an increasing number of them being used as serious race cars, heavier duty components are needed to keep things working in the right direction. Seeing this developing market, S&W came up with this clean sheet design for an axle housing which looks capable of withstanding a nuclear attack. From the artistic level of the welds to the interior bracing and gusseting within the housing, it is almost shameful to bolt this under a car where no one car see it!
The dudes at the S&W booth said that the housings they have out in the field right now have been getting race reviews from users and shops that are installing them. There’s ample reason for that. The housing it 2″ (1″ per side) shorter than the stock 8.8 housing, so that means bigger meats fit under your car comfortably. The shock and control arm brackets are in the stock locations with the lowers being adjustable with multiple holes to use. The housing is alreay prepared for the use of an S&W anti-roll bar and factory brakes can be used with an adaptor kit. See, there’s a lot to like here!
