GM May Close Some Plants for Nine Weeks, One Forever

The news wires were burning last night with reports that General Motors is apparently planning on shutting down most of its plants for nine weeks over the summer.

It should be noted that most plants have a two-week shutdown to retool for next year’s models, but the nine-week shutdown would be made in an effort to curtail production by nearly 200,000 cars for  the year.

If this plan goes into action, the shutdown would start in July, in conjunction with the normally scheduled yearly shutdown.

In more dire news, 700 employees at the Grand Rapids metal stamping plant will be out of work as of June 26th when the company closes that operation for good. Lack of work to support the plant is the reason for the earlier than planned evacuation of workers. It was supposed to take place at the end of the year.
