Gearhead Destination: The Halloween Classic at Summit Motorsports Park

Of all the drag racing events Chad and I have ever been to, and it’s been lots, I’ll argue that the craziest one I’ve seen is the Halloween Classic, held every year at Summit Motorsports Park, formerly known as Norwalk Raceway Park in, Norwalk, Ohio.

This is nearly a week-long affair, held at the end of October, and it’s just wall-to-wall fun and racing. The whole event is comprised of sportsman cars. Normally, cars are parked by the staff of the track on Monday, and the madness begins Tuesday with a Motorhome race and proceeds form there.

People literally pack firewood around their race cars in the trailer. When the night falls and racing is done, it’s party time. The pits are jammed full of people looking for a good time and, luckily for them, icing the beer is easy when the temperatures hover in the 30-40 degree range overnight.

By the time Saturday night rolls around everyone is at a fever pitch. In years past a wheelstand contest has been the central event that everyone packs in for. Ever the showman, Bill Bader announces it, standing on the track as the cars whiz by him on two wheels. These are guys pulling the bars off their race cars, not purpose built wheelstanders either.

This event needs to be on your personal racing bucket list if you are a sportsman or bracket racing competitor. It’s that much fun.

This year’s even runs from 10/21/09 – 10/25/09. Learn more at www.summitmotorsportspark.com
