Irony. That’s what we’d call a situation where one of the most hallowed pieces of ground in the muscle car development years of Detroit has now become the site of battery production for the Chevy Volt enviro-mobile. Wretched horsepower excess replaced with a silent battery pack.
We certainly should not be complaining about GM deciding to fire up a previously dormant manufacturing facility, but it is a large sign of the “change” that’s currently happening with the way we as Americans view our cars. The party is over long-term with respect to new cars. There are still a couple bright spots for enthusiasts to latch onto but there were far more in decades past.
The Detroit News picked up on this same scenario when they published a story about the new $43 million plant being opened for battery pack production. It’s good the General is changing with the times, but our historically minded selves still shed a tear for the strip that closed decades ago.
