Self Loathing: GM To Remove GM Logos From All Vehicles

The Associated Press is reporting that General Motors will
remove its “mark of excellence” logo tags from all vehicles, some
immediately because of a need to promote their individual brands and
not the parent company.

You know it’s bad when GM doesn’t want to promote which brands of cars it produces. Even GM doesn’t like GM right now? Maybe this is “New GM” sticking it to “Old GM,” or then again, maybe this is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Long story short, GM is admitting that the letters “GM” carry a negative connotation these days, and that’s sad.

The logos have been placed on all GM models (aside from the Toyota partnered Pontiac Vibe) since 2005. Back then it was being done to raise awareness about the mothership. Oh, how quickly things can change. When marketing executives use highly scientific teminology like the word “dinged” to describe the response people have when the GM name is mentioned, things are not going well.

Camaros will be among the first to lose the badges as they do not have a specific stamped spot for the badge to fit in like some models do. Those models will see the badges being used until those panels can be changed and brouhgt into production.

Here’s the Associated Press story on the change.
