Forgive a bit of self-indulgence in today’s Daily Tune Up selection but I had to include one of my favorite songs at some point, right?! This is Alvin Lee and Ten Years After shredding out their song I’m Going Home at Woodstock in 1969. This song is one of those dangerous tunes that will cause you to do really dumb stuff behind the wheel. It is also a great tune to have cranked up in the shop when you’re slinging wrenches on your junk.
Lee is one of my favorite guitar players ever and while I don’t know jack about playing the instrument, I sure as hell know what I want it to sound like and this is it. Rocking, dirty, raucous, and on the edge of control. I chose this 11-minute version of the tune from Woodstock because Lee goes into a stream of consciousness deal in the middle and manages to work some Jerry Lew Lewis and other stuff in there for good measure before going back full bore into the close of the song for the last couple minutes. The subtle crescendo the band works up to from 8:00-8:30 and then explodes from is freaking awesome. By the end of the song, there may or may not be fire coming from Lee’s fingers.
The lyrics of this song are pretty deep. We find out where he’s going, which is home. We also discover who he is going to see there, his “baby”. I hate rock and roll that requires thought.
CRANK THE SWEET FLAMING BEJASUS OUT OF YOUR SPEAKERS AND ROCK OUT TO ALVIN LEE AND TEN YEARS AFTER AT WOODSTOCK!
I saw these guys back in the 60’s at the Chicago Coliseum along with the bands “Free” and “Mountain”. Great show.
