RacingJunk Find: A Killer Vintage ’69 Vette Funny Car

With the March Meet coming up this weekend, our thoughts have turned to vintage drag racing. There’s going to be a 32-car field of nitro flops at Bakersfield so naturally we went daydreaming about owning one. We found the perfect piece for us on RacingJunk.com. It’s legendary chassis man Steve Plueger’s first Funny Car build and it carries the bitchin’ name “Black Plague.”

This is not a modern car with an old body on it, it is the original chassis and even the original rear end filled with the correct iron 392 that Plueger would have been running back in the day. Topped with a Hampton blower and Milodon heads, this engine really is a throwback and would make one heck of a cackler or even (if you’re the daring type) eighth-mile squirter.

If you are wondering who the heck Steve Plueger is, he’s one of the premier modern nitro funny car builders and was John Force’s defacto car builder for many years before he took his operation in house. In more recent years Plueger and Dale Pulde ran a modern Funny Car with an “low buck” combination in it at west coast NHRA events. The car was not an event winner but it did prove that a modern nitro Funny Car could be run on somewhat of a budget.

The ‘Vette has cool history as well. Past drivers include Gary Densham and Mike Van Sant. The owner will even trade you for a high performance GM muscle car. Sounds like a deal to us!
