Recently our buddies John Hunkins and Steve Dulcich hit the world renown dyno at Westech Performance in California for a three way camshaft test that we’re thinking you’ll see in the pages of an upcoming issue of Popular Hot Rodding. The good thing for those of us favoring instant gratification is that the guys had a video camera with them and filmed the day’s work of testing three sticks in a healthy big block Chevy dyno mule engine. The guys did a “small/medium/large” style test and used both a dual plane and single plane intake under their four barrel Holley carb. It is cool to see the curves and have Dulcich give some breakdown as to the different characteristics of each cam and intake pairing. Hey, if you are building a rat motor, this is valuable stuff that could aid you in making a parts selection. As you have some to know and love us around here, we’re taking the biggest cam an the single plane intake because too much is plenty fine!
The video is not a high budget operation and we can appreciate the basic nature of it. Honestly, it is pretty cool to be standing in the room with the guys as they talk through the changes, wrench on the motor, and the review the data in the dyno control room. All that’s missing is the smell of assembly lube and, well, the smell of Dulcich. Ok, we are more than OK missing the eau d’Dulcich but you get what we mean.
