What a world it must have been for a gearhead in the late 1950s. So much was happening with aviation technology, and car companies were innovating, inventing, and experimenting with stuff that would have been considered voodoo magic just years (or less) before. This promotional video selling the virtues of “Ram Jet” fuel injection on 1957 Chevy models is awesome. It’s a total sales pitch, and we ate up all ten minutes.
History will show that lots of people ditched their fuelie setups for carbs and maybe this was an idea that outpaced the available technology of the day, but the old timers tell us that when the cars were running right, nothing could touch them. We can only imagine the terror that the idea of fuel injection struck into the hearts of people back then. After all, it was a long road to acceptance in the hot rodding community and this was AFTER the idea of fuel injection had been in cars for, oh, 50 years!
The optimism alone in the voice of the narrator and the script he is reading is worth the price of admission. This was an age of accomplishment and experimentation. Why wouldn’t you want the latest and greatest technology in your car? Why wouldn’t you want some variant of the technology that help defeat the scariest enemy our country had ever known. This is Ram Jet technology, baby! More power, more economy, and the neighbors will be jealous.
