BangShift Daily Tune Up: Road Runner – Bo Diddly (1960)

While not written about the actual Plymouth Road Runner, Bo Diddly’s tune that references the infamous cartoon character is a great listen and a fantastic driving song. The song has been covered by dozens, maybe hundreds of other bands and artists over the years but we still like the original version best. Diddly references the famous animated bird briefly with the meep-meep noises that pop into the song here and there.

From the great bluesy guitar riff to the lyrics, it is a perfect song to put on the stereo, hammer the gas and live the lyrics of the tune. The song was popular back when it first hit the airwaves in 1960, reaching the top 20 of the R&B charts and spending a bunch of time in the top 100 popular music charts as well. You’ll know why when you listen. Can you imagine being at the helm of a warmed up ’57 Chevy or hot rodded deuce when this jam came on? Oh, it would have been arm out the window, head cocked to the side, tire smoking stoplight launches all night! Like Diddly sings in the song…”Oh, you fast? Don’t look like you’re gonna last! I’m gonna put you down!”
