Chad’s been dominating the Daily Tune Up spot for a while so I thought it was my BS civic duty to wrestle control away from him for a day and class the joint up a little. I picked the 1968 Mason Williams hit instrumental Classical Gas. I have no idea what Williams intended with that name, but I’m going with the fact that it was something to do with gasoline. If not? I’ll still sleep OK tonight.
Anyway, this song has an interesting tale behind it. Williams was the head writer for the famous Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour television show and he actually debuted the song on their show. It was one of the most popular shows in the country at the time so the song got immediate mass exposure and quickly rocketed up the charts, stopping at number two for two weeks in August of that year. The song is one of the best selling instrumentals of all time and I love cranking it up now and again when working on something. It stimulates my admittedly limited brain function.

I love that tune! Car related or not, who cares when it’s that good! Thanks for the post Brian.
Yeah…….a real classic.
I can still remember that song playing in the barracks
back in ’68.
Still brings back memories.
