BangShift Daily Tune Up: “Surf City” Jan and Dean (1963)

BangShift Daily Tune Up: “Surf City” Jan and Dean (1963)

“I bought a ’34 wagon and we call it a Woodie, Surf City here we come, You know it’s not very cherry, It’s an oldie but a goodie, Surf City here we come.” How can you argue with lyrics like that? Since Daphne and the kids went to Huntington Beach, aka Surf City, yesterday for the US Open of Surfing, I figured this car/surf tune was appropriate. If you aren’t a Jan and Dean fan, or thought this one was a Beach Boys tune, sorry. Brian Wilson of the Beach boys did co-write the song however with Jan Berry, so it has some Beach Boys influences. As you know, we dig the old surf and car music. If you haven’t gotten hooked on it yet then start listing online, you’ll dig it.

CLick play to watch.

50 years ago, that song started my obsession with cars and California. Chad, thanks for the trip back in time to a easier existance.

The first time I heard this song was going threw my haul from the dumpster of the ( I presume ) now defunct WSMJ radio station. There were all kinds of rock and roll 45’s in there that record company’s sent out hoping for air time. I’m sure I about wore it out.Loved anything that sounded like surfer tunes.
