Swiss Gov’t Study Shows Diesel Cars to be More “Green” Than Battery Powered Ones

Swiss Gov’t Study Shows Diesel Cars to be More “Green” Than Battery Powered Ones

The Swedish government recently completed a study that looked at the impact that Li-Ion batteries from electric cars have on the environment. The results of the study may not be a huge surprise to most BangShifters because we tend to employ logic and rational thought when considering such things, but to latte sucking, tree-hugging, green weiners, this may be like learning that Santa is a sham.

The study found that diesel cars have less overall environmental impact than battery powered or assisted models. While the study did say that the manufacture and disposal of the batteries is not so bad that it would prevent electric cars from advancing, it did point out that an efficient diesel is more better for Mother Earth. Your smoke belching Cummins does not count.

Due to the fact that most available electricity comes from coal fired plants or plants that use other non-renewable resources, the electric cars are still far from being “clean”. That is unless you live in Sweden where all the power comes from renewable resources.

The study found that a gasoline/diesel car would have to burn less than 3.9L of fuel for every 100km traveled to best the impact of an electric/battery car. Ford, VW, and others already have cars on the market (mostly in Europe) that are capable of doing just that.
