Hot Rod Drag Week 2010 – Thursday Update

Thursday racing at Milan Dragway was hot and heavy on the 2010 version Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week. The six second barrier has not been breached but Jeff Lutz made a run at it in his awesome ’57 Chevy, knocking off a 7.06-second 197mph lap to stand as the quickest of the day.

Fellow Unlimited class racer Larry Larson ran 7.15/205 in his Nova. Reports from the track say that the surface was tricky and more than a couple cars were skating around while headed down the strip.

When we caught up with Chad, racing had ended and the late crowd had left the track only to stop about 5-miles down the road in heavy down pouring rain. This is a tough way to start the nearly 400-mile trek to Pittsburgh Raceway.

Here’s some more tid-bits from the day at the track:

There was little or no breakage. This was a stark contrast to Wednesday which say multiple track cleanups, with one lasting more than an hour. Chad reported that there were some guys wrenching, but no one had really puked anything on the track.

Jeff Lutz is a totally legit threat to grab the honor of the first 6-second lap on Drag Week. He and Larson seem to be the only two capable of getting it done at this point. Lutz’s 7.06 lap was aided by a rear gear swap. According to Chad, he stuffed a steeper 3.70 gear in the third member and that put them right in the sweet spot. We’d lay dough down that the big shoebox will see a six before the week is out. The last day is traditionally a time for guys to let it all hang out.

Eric Yost ripped off an 8.0 in the awesome Firebrid with the updated cage.

The drag radial equipped Camaro below ran a blazing 7.97 lap on the wee little tires it currently sports. This is a dedicated drag radial race car that the guys “legalized” for the trip. We think that’s totally bad ass. Chad said that the dudes called the engine in the car a “junk” motor. Judging by what look to be header cutouts in the fenders, they may not be kidding!

We’ll be back tonight with more news, photos, and info from the soggiest drive of the trip!
