eBay Find: The Famous Baldwin-Motion Manx SR Is For Sale! Drag Race and VW History! Who Knew That It Existed Still?!

We’re usually oogling pro street cars or some sort of weirdo monster truck in our eBay finds but this one has actual killer history behind it. Firstly, who knows what a Manx SR is? Totally alright if you are unfamiliar with the breed. The Manx SR was a “grand touring” version of the Manx and it was actually designed to be a road car by Bruce Meyers and Stewart Reed. Featuring an 80-inch wheelbase and a curb weight of 1,500lbs, anyone with a mildly cooked up VW motor had a pretty legit little hot rod on their hands. Word around the internet is that about 200 of these things were sold before the molds were thrown up on the shelf and forgotten about. One of those 200 made it into the hands of Baldwin-Motion. Now, we know that you’re asking what in the hell the guys who plugged big HP rat motors into everything wanted to do with a VW, but there was a side of Baldwin-Motion you may not remember.

Motion Minicar was a joint venture between Bill Mitchell (yes, that Bill Mitchell) Joel Rosen, and Marty Schorr. They worked on hot rodding VWs and other small cars of the era. Bill Mitchell campaigned a nearly unbeatable H-Gas VW known as the “Thunderbug” and this Manx SR was the tow vehicle for it at the track. While we’re not really sure why Mitchell went from the ranks of A/Modified Production into the VW ranks we do know that he hauled the mail and laid waste to the national record perhaps dozens of times over the period he was running the Thunderbug. This particular Manx SR was on the cover of High Performance Cars (as you will see below) and was well traveled around the country appearing where ever the Thunderbug was laying the smack down on all other in H/Gas.

Normally we’re not exactly big fans of 1970s era kit cars, but this one is an exception in the fact that it has awesome history with the Motion crowd, has the original paint which just reeks of 1970s awesome, has the original wheels and tires, and according to the seller, runs like a top. We’d literally touch up any mechanical stuff (brakes, etc) that needed to be done for safety’s sake and then go nuts driving those old Goodyear’s down to the chords. The seller wants $10,500 bucks and we don’t think that the number is too far out of line. There are enough Meyers and Motion enthusiasts out there that in a few years, assuming you didn’t destroy the thing, you could make your money back.

ARE WE SOFT? WOULD YOU OWN THIS THING? DOES IT RULE LIKE WE THINK IT DOES?

Not a fan of the paint, but the car is BOSS!

A buddy in Los Gatos had a silver one back in the 70’s with a Corvair Corsa 140 HP engine (4x1bbl carbs), nice looking car, very, very, fast, but still a “kit car” with all the rattles and squeaks and other unfinished details that make it so.
