(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Part three of our time-traveling adventure takes us to my hometown (Blackwell, OK) and the mud events there. I believe most of these were put on by the Jaycees and occurred in two different locations. There are at least three events represented in this gallery. Again you will see two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive attacking the slop and see many of the regular suspects shown in the previous two articles.
In here you’ll get to see the ‘Earthworm’ 2wd Chevy take a tumble and the 2wd Chevy ‘River Bottom Express’ literally hit the spot that had been stopping everyone. Even Landwehr’s ‘Love, Sweat, & Tears’ fails to make it much past the dam that has been created. However, two-wheel-drive hero, ‘It’s Only Money’ not only scales the wall but continues far down course. The next time that same pit was used the stew was not so deep and many more managed to exit the pit without the shame of being pulled back to the start.
In here you’ll get a look at the ‘Midnight Mudder’ tall Chevy. It uses high-crop portals front and rear to clear the goop. Steering….was handled via two rams and a pivot. No, it didn’t have a tight turning radius, but that’s not what you need for a straight run through the mud. Also in here is a tilt-body Corvette running tall cleats. Lots and lots of mud and water thrown around makes for a good time.

I don’t comment much, but I just wanted to drop in and say I’ve been really enjoying this series. I’m about as far north as you can get in the continental U.S., but I’m fascinated by the southern mudding culture, and it’s really great to see some of the history of the sport through these photographs.
Who was the one who posted this article? My dad was the owner and driver of “it’s only money”. We are actually still racing. Newer more modern truck but we could send pics if you would like to maybe do s follow up article. This is great!! Thanks so much for posting
