Watch An E-Type Jag Gently Nerf A 1963 Shelby Cobra Out Of The Way At Goodwood

Watch An E-Type Jag Gently Nerf A 1963 Shelby Cobra Out Of The Way At Goodwood

We have been sharing a bunch of videos from the recent Goodwood Revival and for good reason. The racing was some of the most intense vintage competition we have ever seen. From the guys wrecking their huge dollar stuff to the guys nearly wrecking their huge dollar stuff to the guys in this video racing their huge dollar stuff like the cars are SCCA Improved Touring class pieces it is high entertainment.

Here we have a full bore racing E-Type Jaguar and a 1963 Shelby Cobra getting after it on the course. The driver of the E-Type tries to make a move on the Cobra and either gives him a little nudge on purpose (not likely) or overcooks the turn and goes wider than he thought it would, resulting in some nose contact with what looks like the rear tire of the Cobra. The contact allows the Jag by but it sends the Cobra onto a harrowing journey across the grass and what looks to be a sure and violent meeting with the tire wall.

By the grace of the almighty the Cobra touches nothing and the Jag continues on its merry way. It seems that people are on both sides of the fence regarding the actions of the E-Type driver. There are those that think he did it on purpose and those that think he was just too hot entering and the consequence was getting into the Cobra. What’s your take?

Oh, and if you are wondering why the Cobra has a roof it’s for a good reason. In 1963 Carroll Shelby was already hell bent on whipping up on the Ferraris at LeMans and his Cobras with their open tops could not mile per hour like the full bodied Ferraris. This was a crutch to help wring some top end of out of the car. It was a stop gap but it was not all that successful. Cue the Daytonas!

It looked like the Jag could have gotten around him easily when the Shelby started losing traction. The extra push was not necessary and a pretty dirty move if you ask me. He just wanted to take out a car that potentially could have beaten him.

Looks like BOTH of them were driving on the ragged edge. I’d call it Racing period. It truly looks like time travel to ’63. Nice to see a race car being raced like it was intended, more power the guys with the money and guts to do it.

I call that racing. There was nothing malicious or with any intent. if you watch close the Jag is scrubbing sideways at the same time as the Cobra. The Cobra gets a little too sideways and scrubs off just enough speed to fall back into the Jag. If both cars had maintained the slide and forward momentum they would have been in sync and there wouldn’t be anything to talk about except really good racing.

I also call that one racing. both guys were on the edge. The Jag guy probably did over drive the car, and maybe stick his nose somewhere it shouldn’t of been, but it’s racing. Im just glad neither car was wadded up.

Jag guy went into the corner with too much speed and it understeered. Just look at his wheels just before contact. They both were sliding them around, but the Jaq guy just went in a little hotter than the line he wanted would take.

I would say the Jag driver gave the Cobra a “love” tap. Could it have been avoided, yes I think so. Driving 50 yr old cars with 50 yr old tire technology (I’m guessing) is my kind of racing!
