Wheels Up Drag Action Photos! Mt. Park Dragway Killer Sportsman Racers

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – I really don’t know where to being with this gallery.  So much great stuff to cover.  I do try to keep my text to a minimum most of the time…..really.  We’ll kick things off with the Comb’s Mustang featuring nothing but black covering everything.  It makes it hard on a photographer when all of it is black….but all the hassle is excused when it runs dead-on after clipping the 60ft beams with the back tires – repeatedly.  This Chevy-powered beast is simply incredible with its consistency while treating the bystanders with wheelie after wheelie.  Not boring.  Next up is the Sour Kraut bug that is the other exhibition vehicle running with the Southeast Gassers.  Paul Combest hauls this thing to run with SEG all over the place and it’s a screamer.  He was being easy on the launch trying to save the diff till winter, but his 1-2 wheelie was much higher (which….I missed).  Paul does it all and even did the gold-leaf lettering on the doors.  His day job is making custom leather holsters.

It’s no secret I like Dodge Darts of the latter 60s and early 70s.  At this event I got the treat of seeing TWO – both yellow.  The one shown here repeatedly performed photogenic burnouts.  I’m not a Mopar guy, but this is definitely on my want list.

The Centers’ family Chevy II has been making laps at Mt. Park Dragway longer than we’ve been visiting this track.  It looks the same to me as the first time we saw it and is still going rounds.  I might also be partial to that body style.  Still not done….  The orange ’57 wagon was neat as a pin and together with its ramp truck is a combination most can envy.  Wheels-up on every launch this thing looks like a blast to drive or just sit and stare at.

Lastly we need to mention the green and black Olds Firenza.  Can’t remember the last time I seen one or if I’ve ever seen one in-person done up like this.  It left the line on the wheelie bars every pass and carried the skinny-tires past the 60ft clocks.  Econobox done good.  I’d bet it’s an old super gas car.

That’s enough.  Enjoy.
