It has been far too long since we darkened the door at our pal Jon Sandahl’s shop, Tube Chassis Designz. As usual, he is rocking on several awesome builds. If you are a Ford fan, you’ll be digging the hell out of this because as luck would have it, he’s got a pile of Fords in the shop. Sure, there’s a Duster getting some chassis work so that it will swallow a 632ci Chevy engine, but blue ovals are running rampant in the place!
There a TON of photos in this post, so scroll down and we’ll give you some info on what Jon and John, his right hand man are up to!
The boys just ‘caged this awesome fastback. The motor in the car is an all aluminum small block Ford. The massive turbo that dominates the front of the car has an inlet measuring nearly 100mm! The block that the engine is based around was in Manny Buginga’s turbo Super Street Outlaw car and it has been 200mph. The boys also relocated the radiator underneath the trunk of the Mustang. This is going to be a street car that will see occasional strip duty. The owner is a guy who was big in the regional drag scene years ago and seems to be inching his way towards a come back. We dig every inch of this car!
This is a Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car that Jon is building for Dana Hard, the owner of Camco Racing Engines. Construction is moving along and with any luck the car will be dive bombing strips and making header flames during the summer of 2012! Ford guys, this one will be running a Chrysler style Hemi.
This black terror is Travis Johnson’s car. Sporting a small block Ford and single turbo, it accelerates like a JATO rocket is strapped to the roof. This car has touched 150mph in the eighth mile on small tires. The guys are making some small tweaks for Travis. Johnson is noted locally as a great EFI tuner and he owns a chassis dyno business where tuning cars is his bread and butter. This is the car that we showed some carnage photos of weeks ago when it broke a piston and literally blew the oil pan off the car due to all the boost pressure heading down the open bore and into the pan. That’s impressive.
Lastly, and certainly not leastly is a project that may become on of the defining projects in the history of Tube Chassis Designz’s business. This is a ground up build of a 1955 Thunderbird which will probably end up being powered by a Ford Coyote engine, which is cool in itself, but that singular fact pales in comparison to the amount of custom work and metal fabrication these guys will do before it is all said and done. Already they have greatly rerworked the front frame to install a Heidt’s front end, installed an independant rear suspension setup and have begun the prep to starting working on mounting the body and making those necessary modifications. This build could draw a lot of national interest just on the fab work alone!
Cool projects. I wish all my welds were that pretty.
Sweet!
(But where do the radiators go?)
Now I know where to drag my junk to if I hit the lottery ;-D.
