The American Powertrain Parting Shift: Ride With NHRA Super Stock Racer Jim Voth In His 4-Speed 1986 Monte Carlo

This week’s American Powertrain Parting Shift takes us front and center to Tulsa Raceway Park and an NHRA Division 5 event that had loads of awesome super stock racers on the grounds. One of them was Jim Voth and he was piloting his familiar GT/E 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo which is equipped with a four speed manual transmission. While the world of NHRA drag racing can get confusing when it comes to stock and super stock racing, the GT categories are (basically) easily explained. Take an older engine and stuff it in a newer car. So the 327 that is in this Monte Carlo was likely one offered in a Camaro, a Chevelle, or some other GM model over the years. We see loads of GT cars that are 3rd gen Camaros with carb’d big blocks in them, etc. As long as it is from the same manufacturer, you can stick that old motor in the newer body style, built it to super stock specs, and have fun. Jim seems to be having lots of fun.

We don’t see a ton of G-body Monte Carlos in the world of NHRA super stock but they look awesome with a big tire on the back and especially when they pull the wheels and sky past the tree like this one. We do not have a clear view of the tach so we cannot say for sure what this baby is pulling for revs but hot damn, it’s a bunch. When he yanks the thing into fourth and it just sits there with the engine spinning harder and harder, it sure sounds sweet.

As a super stocker the car has a full interior and Jim even kept the thin rimmed stock steering wheel to boot. We dig him getting up on the wheel and shifting this baby like a boss!

Press play below to ride along in the screaming 327 powered Monte Carlo at Tulsa!
