Auto Club Raceway Pomona which was known in 1993 as Pomona Raceway stands as one of the great pillars of drag racing in the USA. Yes, the track’s usage is severely limited because of how the local area has encroached on it and it only sees action a couple of times a year but the place has been hosting drag races for more than 65 years now. It is special in many ways. The 1993 Winston finals were held at a revamped Pomona Raceway after the NHRA and the people that run the Fairplex came to an agreement to allow large permanent structures to be built on the grounds for the drag strip. Prior to that most everything that the NHRA used for buildings and stuff was temporary. Effectively, the place took on its modern look 25 years ago.
As is the case each and every World Finals, the early sunset presents a deceptively dark conclusion to each Sunday raceday. It is never late at night but it is always dark when the final bell of the season rings on Sunday afternoon. After that? Party time. Closing out the year with a win is the goal of every team that rolls into the track. Championships will likely all be settled by the time the final rounds are run but there’s something to be said for going out with a bang.
As you will see in this video, teams were more loose with the information about driver and crew chief changes for the upcoming season. Lots of open talk about that stuff in this video whereas this weekend, there will not be much mention made before a flurry of press releases and announcements hit the airwaves next week.
The end of the line for 1993!
