Wray Schelin is a certifiable badass when it comes to metal shaping and belongs to a list of metal shaping masters that we are lucky to have. His YouTube videos, and in person classes, will have you shaping metal before you know it. His videos and classes often go hand in hand, and he uses a variety of big and small tools to show the methods for making metal move. Sometimes I think it surprises folks as to what tools are most often used and that some of the tools that are designed to make things easier can be the right tool for the job too.
One such tool is a shrinking disc.
If you aren’t familiar, you will be after this video. The basics though are that it is a disc that mounts to your grinder in place of a grinding or sanding disc. It is made from steel and usually has ribs or some other texture that imparts heat into anything you put it against while spinning.
We’ll let Wray explain the rest. It’s cool.
Video Description:
Shrinking Disc Magic Hey all, sorry for the delay in our videos. The last 5 weeks or so we’ve had 3 classes and several students stay for our 130 Hour shop special. During this class however we have a student who brought in an Alfa GTV hood that has a lot of high and low spots. Instead of chasing them with a slapper and dolly Wray took out the shrinking disc to show the magic behind it. As you can see he probably used it for about 3 minutes and took out 95% of the highs and lows. There is still a few spots we need to chase but this video is just to show how in a short amount of time you can bring back a panel to its original shape.
