BS Photo Highlight Reel: Dave Nutting’s Favorite Shots From 2012 – Racing, Shows, Thrashing, and More!

(Words and Photos by Dave Nutting) – 2012 was quite the year for me as a photographer in terms of new experiences. It is hard for me to believe, but I’ve only been shooting photos for these two wild and crazy guys at BangShift for a little over a year. It seems like much longer, which I guess is to be expected when you have been on several road trips and had to share a hotel room with Brian… (easy there big guy…ed.)

There’s a ton of really talented photo contributors on this site, and Lohnes stuck me in the lead off spot to share some of my favorite moments and photos from the past twelve months that have been in various BangShift galleries and features.

While technically not a “best of 2012” as they were taken in December of 2011, these photos were some of the first that I took for BangShift. There’s a local message board that Brian and I are both members of, and Jesse’s wagon had a build thread on this board. In November of 2011 I sent Brian a 100% completely unsolicited message asking if he needed help with a photoshoot, and he decided to invite “that weird guy who I assume is 40 years old and lives in a basement” along for the ride. (I nailed the weird and basement part, BTW…Ed.) One hour and a half long drive later, we were watching this:

This wagon is still terrorizing the Worcester area when not being used to pick up the kids from school.

There was a little bit of a lull to start 2012, with the exception of a few dump truck burnouts:

And a quick peak at an ultra-low mileage Plymouth Fury:

March started off with a cruise with a Pro Street Mustang or two:

Oh, and I was also introduced to a certain white Chevy Caprice as well that month (You may have heard of it), which we checked for trunk space and certified for Off Road use:

April brought good weather and a 7 AM wakeup call to take photos of the new Buick Regal GS (I’m still trying to figure out how I took these photos…)

This month also brought a 6+ hour roadtrip to go watch some amazing Pro Touring cars on the track and on an autocross course at the Run To The Shore event. I also met Chad for the first time, which just happened to be in one of the sketchiest parts of Philly at 1:30 AM to eat a cheese steak. I’ve heard this is typically how most people are introduced to him. (Luckily he wasn’t wearing women’s clothing this time…ed.)

Brian was so inspired by all of this action in Jersey (The cars, not the cheese steak eating) that we put Buford through its paces. That went about as well as expected with a 25 year old car with almost 200,000 miles.

Not to be stopped, we also took the great white heap to the track as well for some test and tune action. Never before has there been this much rejoicing over a high 15 second ET:

In between blistering passes by Buford, I saw a few “reasonably quick” cars:

Brian and Chad are like drag strip gypsies and spend most of their summer weekends announcing at events all over the country, so I took advantage of the time off to go to the car show at the local Bass Pro Shops in Foxboro MA every other Thursday afternoon. If you’re in the New England area, I highly suggest checking it out as there’s regularly over 2000 cars:

Late in the summer, Brian got us access to the Corvette Racing team at American Le Mans at Lime Rock. The guys and gals that work for the team are great people, but they’re also serious about keeping their competitive advantage. Let’s just say that there are a whole slew of really cool things that we weren’t allowed to photograph.

Watching the Corvette team beat up on BMWs and Porsches must have inspired Brian, because I kept getting voicemails that consisted solely of maniacal laughter and ramblings about Hotchkis sway bars as thick as my forearm. When I next saw the Caprice, well, let’s just say that it’s still ugly, but you wouldn’t say that to its face.

To make sure that I wasn’t getting too full of myself, I was also introduced to my replacement:

Brian has plenty more in store for Buford this winter that I’ll let him tell you about, so I’ll finish up with two of my favorite photos from my most recent wrenching session at the dyno, one of which I even managed to sneak into. As Tony is demonstrating, if you’re not standing in the engine bay, you’re not working hard enough!

Happy holidays everybody, and keep posted for even more cool stuff in 2013!

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Since meeting Dave in December of 2011, we’ve become fast pals and he’s done some awesome stuff for us here at BS. Chad and I are super appreciative of his contributions and we look forward to torturing him more in 2013. Outside of his bizarre love of G-Body Chevrolets, Dave is a pretty normal guy, which makes it all the more amazing that he’d associate with vagrants like us. His wife Jenna also needs a public thanks for allowing her new husband to go off on all of these adventures. We’re already cooking up some cool stuff for 2013. STAY TUNED!)
