(Words and photos by Scott Liggett) – The GoodGuys car club’s newest addition to their summer filled schedule had its second show in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Haymarket Event Center. In partnership with Speedway Motors, that is right across the street, the Good Guys have a new success in their show schedule. We were there!!
The weekend show starts on Friday night with a cruise in right at Speedway Motors’ facility, complete with one of the coolest gearhead museums around, their Museum of American Speed. “Speedy” Bill Smith, the founder of Speedway Motors, was around racing and automobiles his entire life, and collecting his entire life. Friday night’s festivities included a free tour of the museum. Reason enough to put this show on your schedule.
Your author here had planned to go all winter after having so much fun last year. You see I met, and hung out with, Al Unser Jr and Robby Unser, who were driving Speedway Motors’ Team Speedway ’65 Nova on the autocross. I ran the snot out of my poor ’65 Impala several times myself last year,and even got Al to ride with me! I just had to go back.
It is a challenge for me to go to a show and autocross to cover it for you all if I am actually running the autocross as well. It is too easy to spend the entire day at the autocross, focused on the fun, completely ignoring the hundreds of cars in the show and shine area. But, I managed to get it done by skipping eating lunch, grabbing my camera and strolling through the show to see really fantastic rides this year.
One other thing to note, I noticed sitting in Speedway’s race trailer Al Unser Sr’s 1970 Indy 500 winning Johnny Lightning Special. Al Jr. drove it this year before Indy 500 race as part of their 100th celebration, and they even let me close enough to it to take pictures of this legendary race car.
