Today we look at flathead engines in a vintage, cool, almost quaint kind of way, right? They have appeal because of their age and because they represent the first wave of technology that hot rodders really dug into making better. They still have many supporters and the still have places to race, like Bonneville. Yes, the technology has advanced far beyond these low RPM, low compression engines but we still love them just the same.
The video below is premised as focusing on the 11 best sounding flathead engines and while that is part of it, the reality is that this is just a cool video about different variations on the flathead concept. Ford, Cadillac, Harley-Davidson, Packard, and others are focused on. Makes like Hudson and BMW are part of the video as well.
We’d venture to say that every engine that is featured here is iconic in its own way. Certainly the Ford flathead, certainly the Harley-Davidson engine, certainly the Hudson, and on and on. Sometimes engines are not just about the raw and exponential horsepower that they can create. Sometimes the are about celebrating internal combustion history and showing us where we came from.
