The land of old drag race cars can be a scary one. It can also be a boring and repetitive one as well. The car you see here is neither scary nor boring, in fact it is one of the neatest little gems that we have seen for sale in forever! A 1964 Opel Kadett station wagon (rare in and of itself) that was made into (we’re guessing) a gas class car and used a cross-ram equipped 426 wedge for power creation. The machine as raced in that form for a while and then parked for a long time before being brought back to life with an aluminum headed small block Chevy.
We mentioned that the car is kind of weird and rough and most of that comes down to the fact that the tin-work and the cage were done 40+ years ago and don’t have that sexy modern look to them. They have an amazingly awesome worn in look but they are certainly showing some age. As it sits now the car runs 12s and it does have mufflers on it so you could drive it where you want.
The transmission is a TH350, the rear end is a Chrysler unit with 3.91 gears, and there are some Torque Thrusts out front and some wide rims out back and protrude far away form the body. Because this car is not tubbed, that’s the only way you will get any tire under it at all!
To us, this is the dream buy of anyone who wants to have fun in nostalgia style drag racing. For less than $6,000 you are turn key into it with a rock solid, easy to maintain, 12-second package. It only gets quicker and more fun from here!
Brian…a perfect winter project for you and “da boys”. Throw a tarp over it and hide it from Kerri and the nosy neighbors. 🙂
You know it’s a real race car when it has a 3 way toggle switch for the blinkers (turn signals) 😀
Is the car sectioned down the middle? The width of the Opel definitely seems narrower than stock.
Not quite as wierd as “No Saint” which is a UK based Volvo P1800 gasser!
My Dads “One of Kind” car was a 32 Bantam Roadster with a 390 AMC and 727 tranny. It ran 10.00 to 10:10 all day long in the late 70’s/early 80’s
