This Crazy Clean And Beautiful 1970 Olds 442 Is A Steel Wheel Four Speed Dream – Muscle Car Perfection?

In my travels as an NHRA announcer, I see lots of stock eliminator cars. Stock has been contested at virtually every single NHRA national event since it’s inclusion at the 1960 US Nationals. That means I see what guys and girls are showing up to the track with each week. Yes, seemingly every 1969 Camaro ever built is out there but there are a lot of other cool machines hitting the quarter mile as well. Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Mercuries, and the like are all part of the program. This 1970 Olds 442 is the road going version of so many NHRA stock eliminator cars and I’m totally in love with it. Perfect paint, four speed, 455, the good hood, and a vinyl roof, are all factors adding into my drooling on this car.

In terms of collector value this car seems like it will have some. It is matching numbers and restored at a really high level. Unlike the $98,000 Super Duty Pontiac I shared with you yesterday, this sucker is a veritable bargain with an asking price of $45,000. No, I do not have $45,000 bucks and likely you do not either but when you consider the work that has gone into this car, we’re thinking it is stout money.

It would be fun as hell to get this car to the drag strip and run it just as it sits here. Work on getting the thing out of the hole with the bias-ply tires on it and rip the four speed through the gears. The 455 in this car was one of the best of the breed. It had enough smoke to make the Oldsmobiles a strong factor in the muscle car battle of 1970. As much as the LS6 Chevelles and the 426ci hemi powered cars own the historical headlines, these Oldsmobiles in the hands of a capable driver could absolutely give them a run for their money.

This is a beautiful car that we’d kill to own!

Well, the upholstery is poorly done & I bet it (the interior) was gold originally along with a gold vinyl roof. And, what’s with the dripping wet tire shine? Reminds me of a fly by night, buy here, pay here, used car lot. I’m thinking $35k.

Where are you getting the interior was poorly done? The wrinkles in the seats? Most likely someone was just sitting in the seat before taking the picture. I had one with the original interior that did that. As for the color scheme, it\’s possible the roof and upholstery were originally gold, but that\’s not a certainty. You could order these cars with a range of interior and top colors. Black would\’ve been available with any exterior color offered, because it goes with most anything and it also had the benefit of being the cheapest color available.

If it came new with a black interior, it would have a black dash & steering column. Dashes are a pain in the ass to paint so it was just skipped. Red flag to me, what else was hurried? The seats were likely re-upholstered with an aftermarket kit & they cheaped out and didn’t replace the foam cushions. Blow & glow comes to mind. This car was obviously built to sell, probably a good car, but it’s those little details that bug me.
