There was very little love in the pro stock word as the 1994 season began to unfold. There was the Dodge team anchored by guys like Darrell Alderman and Scott Geoffrion and then there was the Johnson family, Warren and Curt. The race before the 1994 Gatornationals was Houston and it was the scene of the amazing WJ and Geoffrion staging battle that had Buster Couch backing the cars out of the beams as they both refused to stage to the delight of the crowd. The war or words and ill-will carried itself naturally into Gainesville and the TV guys did not waste the chance to make a good story out of it.
John Force was at the peak of his craziness, his success, and his seeming invincibility. There’s an element of watching Force on a top end interview of this we that reminds us of Steve Fast now. “The nightmare continues, kiddies…” is the best quote that Force drops over the course of his various round wins.
The final round pitted Scott Kalitta against his dad Connie which was a fine way to cap off the “silver anniversary” Gatornationals 25 years ago. This was also the year of the Don Prudhomme “Final Strike” tour which would lead him into the world of team ownership and out of the seat. Interestingly, Prudhomme is more involved with drag racing now than he has been with years, helping get Austin Prock’s career off the ground. We dig much about this show, but some of the crew chief stuff is the coolest. Jimmy Prock tuning for Amato among others.
