It was about a quarter century ago that this video was made. Diamond P sports captured the final round action at a race that was then known as the Slick 50 Nationals and as you’ll see, Texas drag racing fans were at Houston Raceway Park in droves. They were there to see the biggest names in the sport throw down and boy did they ever. The videos below capture the dramatic final rounds for top fuel, funny car, and especially pro stock which was the home of one of drag racing’s great staging duels ever. When you get WJ, Scott Geffrion, AND Buster Couch involved, you know it is a party.
We have showed the video of the pro stock battle of wills before but I do not think we have showed it in the context of the race. After the pro stock finals you had the funny car finals with two fan favorites in the form of Chuck Etchells and Al Hoffman. In top fuel it was Scott Kalitta and Don Prudhomme. See, you cannot miss with this one, especially as the finals were run at dusk on Sunday evening and the header flames are more beautiful than a Norman Rockwell painting.
The NHRA continues its Houston tradition a week from today and we’ll be on the scene for the hair-raising action this year as well. We’re interested to see if the momentum the series has carried from Pomona to Phoenix, Gainesville, and Las Vegas will continue down in the great state of Texas!

Always hated the Dodge Boys, drugs and cheats, the barb wire paint scheme they had for a while was as lame as barb wire arm tattoos
