2014 Hunnert Car Heads Up Coverage: Raw, Fun, Cool Drag Racing The Way It Used To Be – Big Fun!

(Words by Greg Rourke – Photos by Greg Rourke and Bob Chiluk) – The Chrome Czars were back at historic Great Lakes Dragaway last weekend for the fifth annual Hunnert Car Heads Up. This event is for vehicles 1965 and older, and looking period correct. They want it to look like what you might have at a track in 1965. For the second year Gasser Magazine held the Gasser Nationals North as part of the action. These guys run cars that look just like what you would see during the Gasser wars in the 60’s, and the drivers are not bashful about running the bloody hell out of these cars. No museum pieces here. Wheels up, bumper dragging runs well into the 10’s were the norm.

Just when you think all the old race cars have been dragged out of every garage in town, you find out how wrong you are. A few new faces showed up this year with old race cars doing what they were built to do. I’m always impressed with recent construction cars as well, with builders making sure they capture the era correctly. One young lad with a straight axle Falcon must get tired of explaining himself to other guys his age about why his car is cooler than a Honda Civic with a fart pipe.
Show cars are always welcome, and a number of them were here for display only. Low and slow kustoms shared space with a factory lightweight 427 Comet. The Meltdown Drags cats were on hand with a nice display, and most of them mixed it up on the track as well. Watch for our coverage of that event next month.

It’s safe to say the vintage drag racing scene is alive and well here in the Midwest, and if the Chrome Czars have anything to say about it, it will be for a long time.
