On any given Mark Rebilas may be shooting NBA games, MLB games, NFL stuff, or who knows what else. During drag racing season however, he’s wherever the NHRA tour is that weekend with his finger next to the shutter button. Rebilas has established himself as one of the hardest working and most talented shooters in the entire field of sports photography, not just drag racing. The dude has work showing up in Sports Illustrated and all kinds of big swinging publications on a frequent basis along with all the usual suspects with respect to motorsports media. Mark’s blog is obviously the best place to follow his work and he has been going through and selecting his favorite shots from 2014 in different genres. He just got to drag racing the other day and posted 100 of his favorite images from the season that was.
These photos range from fiery and violent explosions to intimate, emotional moments that happen when most of the other cameras were facing the other day. In some the subject is the car and in others it is a driver. The mix of stuff is really great and the “family knack” for being in the right place at the right time when the spectacular stuff happens has not left Mark’s side. Gil Rebilas, Mark’s dad plugged a camera into his hands as a kid and from that point forward it has been a near never ending stream of images that capture the beauty, passion, violence, and grit that drag racing exudes. The sport is lucky to have him in many respects. The guy could be out shooting polo matches or something but he’s got it in his blood like the rest of us and that rules.
There are lots of solid photographers who are able to capture moments at the track but Mark definitely has the ability to tell stories through his photos and he can do so in a breadth and depth that few others can.
