2017 NHRA Dutch Classic Super Stock Action – Big Tires And Bigger Wheelies

2017 NHRA Dutch Classic Super Stock Action – Big Tires And Bigger Wheelies

(Words and photos by Joe Grippo) – Maple Grove Raceway recently hosted the legendary Pennsylvania Dutch Classic National Open which closed out the 2017 NHRA Division 1 season. While the weekends warm weather was not the typical mineshaft record setting conditions racers come to expect at the Dutch, sunny skies and the Grove’s hook had everyone smiling.

We looked at Stock last time around, let’s check out Super Stock next. Super Stock Eliminator features primarily late-model sedans and vintage muscle cars, and entries are classified using a system that divides factory shipping weight by NHRA-factored horsepower. Significant engine modifications are permitted, but the vehicle must retain the correct engine block, cylinder heads, and carburetor. Super Stockers, just like Stockers, are handicapped using an index system, and the breakout rule is enforced.

High flying excitement ensues though when a GT classed late model Camaro lines up with traditional styled 4 speed AMX for example, and both hang the hoops for 100 feet and blast down track. The Dutch Classic is unique in that you will find the largest herd of Elephants anywhere outside of the US Nationals at Indy, as this race has its own version of the Hemi Challenge. Darts and Barracudas battling heads up in the SS/AH class for the big check. It’s quite a scene. Chuck Comella did the deed this year in his red Barracuda over the gorgeous flamed Dart of Gary Wolkwitz.
