(Photos by Wes Allison) – You know that you’re on the west coast when you are announcing super stock and the vaunted letters SS/VX come up on the screen. That means Super Stock Volkswagen Experimental and it is a rare breed of monster that seems to primarily inhabit the western states from Washington down to California. The VW you see in the lead was a riot to watch. A 10-second, stick shifted hot rod that made the coolest noise in the non-nitro burning pits, it had the fans on their feet when it ran.
Super stock is so much fun. While I appreciate the locked down rules of stock eliminator, the big tires, the wheelies, and the larger horsepower of super stock is a real attraction to me. It is probably my single favorite class in NHRA drag racing. You’ll see insane diversity and creative thinking in this gallery of photos from the 2018 NHRA Winternationals. Enjoy!
