2019 NHRA Winternationals Photo Coverage: It Was Cool, It Was Fast, and It Was FUN

2019 NHRA Winternationals Photo Coverage: It Was Cool, It Was Fast, and It Was FUN

Don’t let the outwardly sunny appearance of these photos trick you into thinking it was some sort of  tropical paradise in Southern California for the 59th running of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. It was bright and sunny most of the time but it was pretty cold as well. The weather conditions confronted racers and made them really step up their tuning and driving games during the week. Index racers were trying to get their stuff consistent and accurately tuned while the heads up contingent was working hard to tame the increased power that cool, dry, air brought to them.

Rain halted racing on Sunday and extended the event to Monday, making an already long drag race a real grinder for those brave souls who clawed their way to the end. These photos come from Friday at the event and feature a wide range of classes from stock eliminator right up through the professional ranks. Check them out below, click them to expand, and we’ll be back with more tomorrow!

Love the lead photo, Lou Gasparrelli (r.i.p.) was at the very-first Winternats I went to as a kid in ’73 which btw was rained out a full two weekends, it was killing me. Most of the crowd still kept showing.
